Spanish Subjunctive Irregular Verbs
Understanding exactly what the subjunctive is and what it used for is confusing for many English speakers. The reason for this is that the subjunctive is rarely used in English.
However, in Spanish, the subjunctive is used a great deal and as such, it is important to have a proper understanding of how and when it is used.
What is the Subjunctive?
The subjunctive is often made out to be far more difficult to understand than it actually is. First of all, the subjunctive is not a tense, it is a mood.
A tense is used as a way of explaining when an action actually takes place; present, past and future, a mood, on the other hand, reflects how the speaker feels about the action.
To show this more clearly here are some examples:
- The teacher suggests that the student take his work home.
- The subjunctive conjugation in this case is – the student take.
- If I were wealthy, I wouldn’t need to worry about money
- Here, the subjunctive is – I were.
How do you use the Subjunctive?
The main difference between the more commonly used indicative mood and the subjunctive mood is that the indicative is used to express certainty and objectivity whereas the subjunctive is used to express the opposite, uncertainty and subjectivity!
Indicative examples
- Andrew is going to the cinema – Andrew va al cine
- I know that Andrew is going to the cinema – Sé que Andrew va al cine
- I do not doubt that Andrew is going to the cinema – No dudo que Andrew va al cine
These three examples show that; Andrew going to the cinema is certain.
Subjunctive examples
- I want Andrew to go to the cinema – Quiero que Andrew vaya al cine
- I hope that Andrew goes to the cinema – Espero que Andrew vaya al cine
- It is possible that Andrew will go to the cinema – Es posible que Andrew fuere al cine
All of the above sentences declare an uncertainty as to whether Andrew will go to the cinema.
- It’s good that Andrew goes to the cinema – Es bueno que Andrew vaya al cine
- It’s important that Andrew goes to the cinema – Es importante que Andrew vaya al cine
When do you Use the Subjunctive?
There is a very simple rule to apply that will indicate the use of the subjunctive it is necessary.
If a sentence uses a main clause followed by a second clause, and the main clause declares certainty or objectivity, the sentence will use the indicative mood in the second clause as in the sentence; I know that Andrew goes to the cinema. I know being the main clause. However, should the main clause declare an uncertainty or subjectivity, such as I hope, the subjunctive is normally used.
