Learning Spanish is a popular pastime, as well as a serious goal for many individuals. In fact, learning in later life has been proven to help preserve mental agility and awareness, as well as being a great, rewarding way to pass the time.

But where to begin, there are so many choices. Classroom study, while great for face to face learning, is not always convenient for the hectic lives we all lead. It requires extra time for traveling to and from classes, while having to arrange your schedule around class times someone else has determined. Engagement in Online Courses.

Engagement in Online Courses.

$115.71

The Internet and World Wide Web are transforming delivery of education and making it possible for more individuals than ever to have access to knowledge any time and place across the globe. The extent of learner engagement is key to online learning environments. Constructivist learning theory, an emerging theory of connectivity, and Merrills principles of instruction served as the theoretical basis of the study. This study investigated what factors relate to engagement in online learning and whether specific benchmark indicators of effective educational practice could predict engagement. Benchmark indicators as measured by the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) were derived from Chickering and Gamsons (1987) seven principles for good practice in undergraduate education. These benchmarks included level of academic challenge, active and collaborative learning, studentfaculty interaction, and enriching educational experiences. How these benchmarks related to overall engagement levels was the focus of the research. Results indicated that all four benchmarks were highly related to engagement and strongly predicted engagement in online courses. This research was important in identifying best practices in online education so that design and delivery of online courses may be improved to enhance levels of engagement for all students. Factors Affecting Retention in Online Courses.

Factors Affecting Retention in Online Courses.

$115.71

The purpose of this study was to expand what is known regarding the factors that relate to successful completion of online, undergraduate college courses. It addressed 13 student factors available through archival data at Northern Kentucky University based on 1,493 students enrolled in fully online courses in fall 2008. It included programmatic membership as the fourteenth variable. The study employed both logistic regression analysis and multiple regression analysis. The dependent variable for the logistic regression analysis was dichotomous based on completion of all online courses with a grade of D or better (yes or no). The dependent variable for the multiple regression analysis was a continuous variable, percentage of online courses completed. The following variables were found to have a positive relationship to successful completion of online courses: applying for financial assistance, GPA, senior year in college, major in health and human sciences, major in a STEM field, and tuition residency of metro rate. The following variables were found to have a negative relationship to successful completion of online courses: race of Black and freshman year in college. The freshman year in college only showed as a significant variable in the multiple regression analysis. Author: Berling, Victoria L. Applying the three types of interaction and the analytical model help teaching and learning become more effective. When the instructor applied the analytical model: frequency of interaction, patterns of online interaction, the level of the learner instructor interaction in online course increased. Furthermore, social cues encouraged learner instructor interaction when the instructor allowed students to build rapport with their instructor and classmates in the first week of the class. When the instructor led online interaction by using the frequency of interaction and patterns of online interaction from the analytical model,it also promoted the learnerlearner interaction. Moreover, using social cues in the beginning of the online course assisted students in becoming familiar with their classmates. As a result, students felt more comfortable sharing information with their fellow classmates. When instructor used cognitive and metacognitive approaches in the assignments,it assisted students to think critically and develop skills and knowledge that they can use outside of the classroom. Faculty Perceptions of TeamDeveloped Online Courses

Faculty Perceptions of TeamDeveloped Online Courses

$121.08

Institutions of higher education are challenged to meet the growing demand for online education. Models for developing online learning environments and preparing faculty to work in them must be evaluated for effectiveness and quality. Gathering and understanding faculty perceptions concerning these models are critical to evaluating them. There has been little research on the impact of team designed online courses on the faculty who facilitate them. This book describes a mixed method, quantitative/ qualitative, descriptive study that explored the perceptions of faculty who have facilitated team developed online courses. It provides specific clues concerning the strengths and weaknesses of the team model, while suggesting improvements and the possibilities for the creation of better models. Although the study indicates that faculty did not perceive that eliminating course development from their responsibilities as online instructors would mitigate all problems in online learning environments, there seem to be other potential benefits. Cyber Connections in Online College Courses

Cyber Connections in Online College Courses

$134.33

The role and face of the college student has drastically changed with many traditional college students (1822 year olds) facing extraordinary costs of college tuition, having to work in addition to attending school, and the nontraditional adult learner returning to school has left universities and colleges with little physical space for classes and a need to address the new learners. Online education offers an opportunity for working students to attend college while addressing work and other responsibilities. The problem is that online education is new to not only students, but also faculty teaching in these areas. One areas is the use of the communication tools used in online courses such as email, instant messaging, chat rooms, etc. Another is one may assume that younger students have an advantage over adults using communications tools. Students sometimes feel the isolation as well as the faculty member of being disconnected in an online course. This research examined how students used communication tools to foster social communications in order to connect to one another in a social learning environment that provided a richer context for a learning community to evolve during the semester. Does gender affect the way students use communication tools to connect using social communications? Does age have an effect on the way that students use communication tools using social communications? The book addresses faculty, administrators, and distance education professionals in community colleges, fouryear colleges, and universities and can provide insight to those organizations using online education in training and continuing education courses. Author: Carpenter, Pam Page Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 176 Publication Date: 2008/03/01 Language: English Dimensions: 9.61 x 6.69 x 0.38 inches

Development of a Medium for Teaching Online Courses

Development of a Medium for Teaching Online Courses

$176.84

This last decade has seen a noticeable rise in Online systems which are generally used alongside specific tools such as video and audio to deliver learning over distance. However these systems have not reached their expected potential for a number of reasons e.g. lack of motivated users. Research into theories of learning and technology and evaluation of a made for purpose learning environment has highlighted certain factors that contribute to this failure. e.g. absence of pedagogy, lack of understanding or an environment the does not allow users to engage in higher level learning. This book provides advice to tune a system to deal with these issues by resolving the physical motivational psychological factors that prevent learning. It approaches this through exploration of theories and practice to determine those that readily lend themselves to an Elearning environment. The outcome: best practice model for elearning. This covers: material design and quality of a system to deliver learning; the systems ability to adjust to user performance; quality of learning and teaching with the advice on good facilitative practices and last but not least the usability of the system. Author: Searchwell, Louis Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 244 Publication Date: 2009/06/01 Language: English Dimensions: 9.00 x 6.00 x 0.55 inches

Opened on 17 June 1986 to accommodate and display the collections of Franz Mayer, it holds Mexico’s largest decorative art collection and also hosts temporary exhibits in the fields of design and photography. The collection shows items from different regions, materials and styles ranging from the 16th century to the present day, primarily from Mexico, Europe and the Far East. The most important genres in it are: silverware, ceramics, furniture, textiles, sculpture and painting. The historic building currently occupied by the museum, dating from the 16th century, was the first hospital built in the Americas by the Brothers Hospitallers of St. John of God. The cloister, owing to its beauty, is one of the highlights of the museum. It hosts temporary exhibits and through it one can access three rooms decorated to resemble a dining room, a cabinet and a chapel from the times of the Viceroyalty of New Spain. The upper cloister features the public library, where several items are on display. It holds over 14,000 books, many of them rare and antique, as well as historical documents and over 800 editions of the book “Don Quixote” (Don Quijote de la Mancha). The museum offers guided tours, courses, lectures, concerts, shows, children workshops and special activities for the affiliate members. View of the Franz Mayer Museum from Hidalgo Street. Excerpt: Heitor Villa-Lobos (March 5, 1887 November 17, 1959) was a Brazilian composer, described as “the single most significant creative figure in 20th-century Brazilian art music”. Villa-Lobos has become the best-known and most significant Latin American composer to date. He wrote numerous orchestral, chamber, instrumental and vocal works. His music was influenced by both Brazilian folk music and by stylistic elements from the European classical tradition, as exemplified by his Bachianas Brasileiras (“Brazilian Bach-pieces”). Heitor Villa-Lobos was born in Rio de Janeiro. His father, Raul, was a wealthy, educated man of Spanish extraction, a librarian, an amateur astronomer and musician. In Villa-Lobos’s early childhood, Brazil underwent a period of social revolution and modernisation, finally abolishing slavery in 1888 and overthrowing the Empire of Brazil in 1889. The changes in Brazil were reflected in its musical life: previously European music had been the dominant influence, and the courses at the Conservatório de Música were grounded in traditional counterpoint and harmony. Villa-Lobos underwent very little of this formal training. After a few abortive harmony lessons, he learnt music by illicit observation from the top of the stairs of the regular musical evenings at his house arranged by his father. He learned to play the cello, the guitar and the clarinet. When his father died suddenly in 1899 he earned a living for his family by playing in cinema and theatre orchestras in Rio. Around 1905 Villa-Lobos started explorations of Brazil’s “dark interior”, absorbing the native Brazilian musical culture. Serious doubt has been cast on some of Villa-Lobos’s tales of the decade or so he spent on these expeditions, and about his capture and near es… More:

Excerpt: Bosque is the name for areas of gallery forest found along the flood plains of stream and river banks in the southwestern United States . It derives its name from the Spanish word for woodlands .In the predominantly arid or semi-arid southwestern United States, the bosque is an oasis -like ribbon of green vegetation, often canopied , that only exists near rivers, streams, or other water courses. The most notable bosque is a 200 miles (320 km)-long ecosystem along the middle Rio Grande in New Mexico that extends from Santa Fe past Socorro including the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge .The trees in the bosque habitat are generally smaller species which rarely exceed 10 metres (33 ft), such as mesquite . Larger cottonwood trees are also common in some areas. Because there is only a single canopy layer and because the tree species found in the bosque are generally deciduous , a wide variety of shrubs, grasses, and other understory vegetation is also supported. Desert hackberry , blue palo verde , graythorn (Condalia lycioides ) ) , Mexican elder (Sambucus mexicana ) ) , “virgin’s bower “, and “Indian root” all flourish in the bosque. The habitat also supports a large variety of lichens . For a semi-arid region, there is extraordinary biodiversity at

Excerpt: Escape to Last Man Peak is a popular Jamaican novel written by Jamaican author Jean D’Costa. First published in 1975, it chronicles the adventure of ten orphans who embark on a dangerous journey across Jamaica, from Spanish Town, St. Catherine to Last Man Peak located near Falmouth, Trelawny, after a deadly pneumonia epidemic kills the caretakers of their orphanage, and propels the country into a state of anarchy and desolation. Containing elements of social science fiction, the text examines genuine human nature in conditions of chaos and despair, and explores how determination and self-will can help people achieve the unthinkable. While narrated in standard English, the dialogue is written in Jamaican creole (see Jamaican Patois). The novel was a standard text for English courses for first- or second-year high school students, although it is now used less frequently. The novel is considered one of Jamaica’s great works of fiction. “In two weeks we should have had Christmas, if the sickness had not come.” At the beginning of the novel, the narrator, eleven-year-old Nellie Atkins, as well as nine other children at the Sunrise Home Orphanage (Jimmy; Pauline; Sylvia; Wus Wus; Gerald; Frankie; Myrna; Pet and Precious) are shocked to discover that the matron of their orphanage has died in the hospital from the pneumonia epidemic (referred to as “the sickness”) that is raging through the country. Afraid that they will be made to work in a labor camp, the children are at first desolate; however they later learn that eleven-year-old Wus Wus, a shy albino boy, is the secret owner of a house and a very large plot of land on the other side of the island called

 Teaching Literature and Language Online

Teaching Literature and Language Online

Educators today teach in a range of formats, from traditional face-to-face courses to Web-assisted courses in physical classrooms to entirely online courses in which the teacher and students never meet in person. The pressure to integrate teaching with information technology is strong, and more and more educational institutions are offering blended courses and distance-education learning options. The essays in this collection illuminate the realities of teaching language and literature courses online. Contributors present snapshots of their experiences with online pedagogies, realizing that, just as this year’s technology writes over last year’s, the approaches and teaching tools they have pioneered will also be obscured by future innovations. At the same time, the volume describes models that first-time teachers of online courses will find useful and provides extensive insights into online education for those who are experienced in teaching blended and open-source courses. The volume begins with an overview of online education in the fields of literature and language and then offers case studies of particular technologies used in specific courses. Subjects extend from Old English and ancient world literature to Shakespeare and modern poetry, and languages include Aymara, Chinese, English as a second language, French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish. Contributors describe using multimedia Web sites, cyberplay and gaming, bulletin boards, chat rooms, blogs, wikis, natural language processing, podcasting, course management systems, annotated electronic editions, text-analysis tools, and open-source applications. They show that online pedagogies often have surprising capabilities–such as transforming a Web-based environment into an intimate social community spanning institutions and oceans, saving endangered languages, and rescuing isolated communities and individuals who have no other educational lifeline.
