Cautivante – Spanish Language Edition $13.99 “Every little girl has dreams of being swept up into a great adventure, of being the beautiful princess. Sadly, when women grow up, they are often swept up into a life filled merely with duty and demands. Many Christian women are tired, struggling under the weight of the pressure to be a “good servant,” a nurturing caregiver, or a capable home manager. >> What Salvaje de corazón did for men, Cautivante can do for women. This groundbreaking book shows readers the glorious design of women before the fall, describes how the feminine heart can be restored, and casts a vision for the power, freedom, and beauty of a woman released to be all she was meant to be. By revealing the core desires every woman shares-to be romanced, to play an irreplaceable role in a grand adventure, and to unveil beauty-John and Stasi Eldredge invite women to recover their feminine hearts, created in the image of an intimate and passionate God. Further, they encourage men to discover the secret of a woman’s soul and to delight in the beauty and strength women were created to offer. |

Colonial Encounters in New World Writing, 1500-1786 $35.95 This pioneering study examines the extraordinary proliferation of polyphonic or “multi-voiced” texts in the three centuries following the first contact between Europeans and indigenous peoples of the Americas. These plays, printed dialogues, travel narratives, and lexicographic studies, in English, Spanish and French, reverberate with a cacophony of voices as both European and indigenous writers of the early Americas stage the interaction of their cultures. Paying particular attention to performance and performativity in the texts of the early colonial world, Susan Castillo asks:- why vast numbers of polyphonic and performative texts emerged in the Early Americas- how these texts enabled explorers, settlers, and indigenous groups to come to terms with radical differences in language, behavior, and cultural practices- how dialogues, plays, and paratheatrical texts were used to impose or resist ideologies and cultural norms- how performance and polyphony allowed Europeans and Americansto debate exactly what it meant to be European or American or, in some cases, both.Tracing the dynamic enactment of (often conflictive) encounters between differing local narratives, Castillo presents polyphonic texts not only as a singularly useful tool for exploring what initially seemed inexpressible or for conveying controversial ideas, but also, crucially, as the site where cultural difference is negotiated. Offering unprecedented linguistic and historical range, through the analysis of texts from Spain, France, New Spain, Peru, Brazil, New England and New France, her volume is an important advance in the study of early American literature and the writings ofcolonial encounter. |

”Amigas y amantes”: How first and second generation Latinas negotiate family, partnerships, and community in the United States. $49.99 This research is a qualitative study that looks at the experiences of migrant and second generation Latinas who identify as lesbian, bisexual, or queer. It is an exploration into the daily lives of a predominately ignored group whose narratives not only provide insight into gender and sexual relations in Latina/o cultures but also to the intersections of Latina’s experiences in the dominant culture. This work is based on 40 in-depth interviews with lesbian, bisexual, and queer Latinas in addition to 14 months of participant observation at Latina/o LGBT events in Connecticut and New York City. In this work, I highlight how racism, sexism, ethnocentrism, and homophobia affect the partnerships Latinas form in the United States, the relationships they maintain with their families of origin, and the identities they come to adopt in this country. As migrants, native Spanish speakers, and often members of the working poor, many of these women struggle with power imbalances in their relationships. Furthermore, the bicultural nature of some of these relationships can lead to language barriers, different cultural beliefs, and familial alienation. In this work, I not only make a contribution to sexuality, gender, and immigration studies but I also add to the scholarship on racialization in the United States as I emphasize the divisions which occur within Latina/o communities on account of nationality, class and immigrant status. This study builds on our understanding of the relationship between immigration, racialization and sexualities studies. |

”Aqui en los Estados Unidos hablamos ingles….o, y espanol tambien”: Students’ emerging language ideologies and literacy practices in a dual language primary program. $49.99 This dissertation is a mixed-methods study of language ideologies and literacy practices in Dual Language (DL) programs. The ideologies of participants were examined in five schools with DL programs, one specific DL program at Presidio Primary, two first grade DL classrooms and in students’ homes.;The quantitative data consisted of a questionnaire, Teachers’ Language Ideologies (TLI), consisting of demographic, five-point Likert scale and open-ended items. MANOVA was applied to 209 questionnaires to explore group differences on four factors of language ideologies. Participants’ bilingualism had little influence on their language ideologies and practices while teacher assignment and certificate had a significant influence.;Qualitative research methods included observations, interviews and Critical Discourse Analysis. Official Discourse was uncovered through policy documents and administrator interviews. Analysis showed asymmetrical treatment of two programs: discourse on transitional bilingual/ESL programs demonstrated language-as-problem and assimilationist ideologies whereas discourse on DL programs demonstrated language-as-resource and linguistic pluralism.;Qualitative findings also showed there was a divide between Spanish dominant and English dominant mothers related to DL implementation and literacy instruction. Spanish dominant mothers questioned the practice of delaying formal introduction of English literacy. Despite the fact that their parents had enrolled them in the DL program, not all students held positive views of Spanish and English at Presidio Primary. The children appeared to be most influenced by their families’ perspectives on language rather than the school environment. Remarkably, children’s ideological stances mirrored closely those of their mothers, demonstrating the importance of parental voice for successful DL program implementation. |

”Do you speak alien?” The ups and downs of a Spanish language preschool program. $49.99 Why should English speaking preschool children learn a second language? The lack of foreign language education in American schools puts English speaking students at a disadvantage in an ever-globalizing world. The Deacon Park Preschool (DPP), in Atlanta, Georgia, established a foreign language (L2) Spanish program in 2003 designed to provide cultural and linguistic sensitivity and awareness. This thesis is a community based applied/action case study of the L2 preschool program that is informed by the researcher’s creation and implementation of the integrated Montessori inspired, naturalistic, fifteen-month program in 2003-2004. This study evaluates the current Spanish program (2007) and explores the sustainability of the previously implemented L2 teaching/learning approach. Data was collected through applied anthropological qualitative methods including field observations and in-depth interviews with teachers, parents, and the director of the DPP. Findings address the paucity of research that focuses specifically on teaching a L2 to preschool students and provide a recommendation for future improvements. Research from this topic addresses issues of program development and sustainability for foreign language programs with limited resources. By providing an evaluation of one innovative approach for second language learning, this work adds to both the theory and practice of creating and sustaining second language enrichment programs for majority language students that can be adapted and applied at other locations. |

”Hablamos espanol”: An inquiry into the use of role-plays in a Spanish middle school classroom. $49.99 Research Question. How do small group role-plays influence students’ engagement in class, attitudes toward learning Spanish and ability to use the language to communicate with both written and oral fluency?;Research Activities. Context: This study took place in an 8th grade Spanish classroom (N=14) in rural Appalachia. Nine focus students were selected for in depth analysis, three at each level of performance: (low, medium and high).;Methods and Data. This intervention occurred over a five-week period and consisted of three five-day lesson cycles in which students worked in groups of 4–5 to complete open-ended role-plays. Role-plays were designed to mimic real-to-life scenarios in a restaurant. Students researched restaurant websites in Spain, wrote, practiced and preformed a different role-play over each of the five-day periods. A home school connection included students practicing role-playing with family members and each other via phone calls.;Results. Student self-efficacy as language speakers greatly improved (from 50% to a 100%), as did their confidence speaking Spanish in both one-on-one situations and in front of the class, with only 2 students feeling hesitant about presenting. Student writing also improved, with students showing an average increase of 8.5 verbs and 6 additional message units. Additionally, students developed greater oral fluency based on a 1–4 rubric, becoming more comprehensible (from 2.4 to 3.3) and more accurate in their use of grammar rules. All students were observed to be highly engaged and excited about practicing and performing role-plays.;Conclusions. Using role-plays in a language classroom improves student confidence, and speaking abilities. Role plays helped students in using Spanish during group work and provided extensive speaking practice. Additionally, students who engage in role-plays improve their writing abilities by including more complex grammar structures.;Grade Level. Eighth Grade;Data Collection Methods. |
