Spanish Writing: Top Tips and Top Websites
Writing Spanish isn’t as easy as just replicating the Spanish you read – you need to be able to construct opinions and present information independently, and therefore practicing writing Spanish regularly yourself is essential. Reading gets you used to different Spanish structures and phrases but there are other resources online and tips to follow which will improve your Spanish writing rapidly. This article contains some useful tips and pointers to other resources to improve your Spanish writing.
First of all I would recommend learning a good range of phrases for a Spanish essay – you can find these just by searching Spanish essay phrases on Google and you will end up with a range of phrases to add structure to your essay and allow you to construct an argument. These phrases might include ‘para empezar’ or ‘para concluir’ if you need to start or conclude your Spanish essay, or useful connectives such as ‘por eso’ and ‘asi’ if you want to ensure your Spanish essay flows. The more of these you can learn the better because your essays will begin to read more naturally and the greater variety of phrase will earn you the better marks.
There is a useful collection of Spanish essay phrases available at http://www.topspanishtips.weebly.com.
The next piece of advice is simply to learn the structural and punctuation rules common to all Spanish writing. This includes learning how to structure a letter properly, for example, and also how different punctuation is used, such as the inverted question and exclamation marks and how to overcome using apostrophes. This is beginners stuff really, and it might be a bit boring, but make sure you know it to avoid any stupid elementary mistakes in your Spanish writing.
Using a dictionary properly will also improve your Spanish immensely. Make sure you read very carefully what each translation actually means so that you are definitely using the word in its correct context. Furthermore you should be using an online dictionary like Spanish Dict like a thesaurus – this resource provides synonyms which will make your work more varied in terms of vocabulary and get you better marks as you avoid constant repletion of certain words. For example if you translate the word evil the Spanish Dict provides six different suggestions – if you could incorporate all of these rather than repeating ‘mal’ constantly the improvement in your Spanish writing will be unmistakeable.
Finally, as I say, you can’t avoid doing the reading if you want to really improve. There is so much material to choose from – short stories, novels, blogs, non-fiction and news articles are all really great ways to discover the different styles of written Spanish and to find phrases and styles to incorporate into your own Spanish writing. Make sure you are constantly making a note of the best words and phrases and go over them to make sure they stay in your memory.

La Gaviota: A Spanish Novel $31.53 La gaviota, the great Fernan Caballero Spanish novel, in a US printed edition Fernn Caballero is one of the great XIX Century Spanish novelist, considered the first to introduce the realist novel in Spain. That alone would have granted the author a place among Spanish writers, but the fact that Caballero is a pseudonim behind which stands a woman, transforms the author into a novelistic character in her own right. Cecilia Bhl de Fabers life is as fascinating as her characters. Born in Switzerland, educated in France, Cecilia Bhl became a highly successful woman writer in Spain, even regarded as the Spanish answer to Walter Scott, not a minor feat in the Spanish society of that time. La gaviota is her first novel. Originally written in French it was translated into Spanish with the authors own supervision, and immediately caught the demanding Spanish literary circles attention. Even though this is the type of books reserved to Spanish studies readings, in this edition we took care to include just the necessary annotations as to help the modern reader sail through the novel without any obstrusive lengthy interruptions. If you enjoy reading in Spanish, and admire brilliant prose, this is a book to read. Author: Caballero, Fernan Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 294 Publication Date: 2010/09/01 Language: English Dimensions: 7.44 x 9.69 x 0.62 inches |

Spanish Picaresque Elements $105.14 Over the last few decades, literary criticism and scholarship has changed so rapidly and expanded so multifariously. However, scholars have not yet paid a new insight in learning to read critically to older Spanish picaresque novels. Sometimes, these scholars neglect of the generic view may not be a case of will but of an unawareness, to the origin and distinct canons of the genre. Old Spanish picaresque novels of the 16th C. and early 17th C. can offer an endless supply of historical awareness and critical perspective of the origin and distinct features of the genre.Comprehending the literary conventions underpinned in the prototypes of the genre: Lazarillo de Tormes, Guzman de Alfarache and El Buscon, their continuity and discontinuity in the light of intertextuality are thoroughly scrutinized in this book. This book is essential to new and also to more experienced literary scholars who engaged in studying world literature from generic point of view. Moreover, it is helpful for literary academicians to take informed measures and to regain the hightoned literary merits of Spanish picaresque elements: there by to shade lights on the study of novel writing traditions evolution. For Student Series Drama: The Spanish Tragedy by Thomas Kyd $8.99 The Spanish Tragedy (New York: W. W. Norton, revised edition, 1989), a play by English dramatist Thomas Kyd, was written between 1582 and 1592, when the first known performance took place. Kyd was a popular dramatist in his day, although most of his plays have been lost. The Spanish Tragedy is one of very few extant plays that can with certainty be attributed to him. The play is important not only for its own merits but also because it is the first example of a revenge tragedy, a type of play that was to become extremely popular on the Elizabethan stage during the last decade of the sixteenth century and beyond. The most famous of all revenge tragedies is Shakespeare’s Hamlet, and some of the plot devices in The Spanish Tragedy, such as the protagonist’s hesitation in carrying out his revenge, are echoed in Shakespeare’s play. Kyd based The Spanish Tragedy on the tragedies written by the Roman playwright Seneca, whose plays focused on murder and revenge. The emphasis was on a malignant fate that led inevitably to a bloody and horrific catastrophe. Although The Spanish Tragedy is not performed in the early 2000s, its intricate plot, full of intrigue and even containing comic incidents, its swift-moving and sensational action, the questions it poses about the nature of justice and retribution, and the well-developed character of the revenger, Hieronimo, make it a rewarding play to read. |

An Acoustic Study of Spanish Voiceless Stops $132.24 Why does spontaneous speech in any language sound so different from read speech? This book looks at some acoustic properties of sounds where this difference is reflected. For this project, Spanish voiceless stops were studied in three different speaking modes: conversation, sentence reading and text reading, in two native speakers from Spain. The four acoustic cues observed were the duration of the closure portion of the stop; the duration of its Voice Onset Time (VOT); the presence or absence of any voicing during the closure portion and during the VOT portion; and the amplitude level of the burst. The results show that voiceless stops in any type of speech show similar coarticulatory influences. But conversation mode, as opposed to the other two speaking styles, has differences that are reflected principally in two acoustic correlates, the burst portion of the stop (including VOT duration and amplitude) and the presence of some type of voicing within the closure. When the Spanish first explored and settled the New World, it was the time of the High Renaissance. As this era evolved into what we now call the Baroque, interior design styles and furnishings reflected the opulence afforded by the new wealth of the Americas. One can imagine the lavishly ornamented chandeliers and lamps of Rio Bravo illuminating the palaces, haciendas and homes of the affluent throughout Spanish America. The Old World finish, Almond Mottled Scavo glass, pendants and medallions, and the beading and cast bobeches and accents perfect our tribute to a rich heritage.Rio Bravo 1lt Wl/brkt -owFixture Type: Wall BracketFamily: Rio BravoFinish: Old WorldBathroom, Bedroom, Breakfast Room, Dining Room, Entry/Foyer, Family Room, Hall, Kitchen, Mudroom, StudyDimensions: W 5” x H 15” x Ext. 9”Number of Lights: 1Lamp Type: 1 – 60W Candelabra (not included) |

Most of the authors represented in our collection are treated more or less fully in textit{The Development of the English Novel, by Wilbur L. Cross. (New York: The Macmillan Co., 1900), where they may profitably be viewed in relation to the main stream of fiction. Most of the recent books on the short story were intended primarily to serve as practical manuals for the writer. This purpose, however, does not render them less useful to the student who desires merely to understand the nature and appreciate the merits of the form. Indeed, the surest way to a recognition of the art in ” Rip Van Winkle “or “Phoebe” is to study two or three of the books in the following list, to write a short story, and then to compare it with the work of 0. Comparison of the English and Spanish theatres.—Spirit of the romantic drama.—Shakspeare.—His age and the circumstances of his life.—How far costume is necessary, or may be dispensed with.—Shakspeare the greatest drawer of characters.—Vindication of the genuineness of his pathos.—Play on words.— Moral delicacy.—Irony.—Mixture of the tragic and comic.— The part of the fool or clown.—Shakspeare’s language and versification.—Account of his several works : comedies, tragedies, and historical dramas.—Appendix on the pieces of Shakspeare said to be spurious. In conformity with the plan which we at first laid down, we shall now proceed to treat of the English £tod Spanish theatres.—We were compelled in passing to allude cursorily, on various occasions, sometimes to the one and sometimes to the other, partly for the sake of placing, by means of contrast, many ideas in a clearer light, and partly on account of the influence which these stages have had on the theatres of other countries. Both the English and Spaniards possess a very rich dramatic literature ; both have had a number of fruitful dramatic poets of great talents, among whom even the least admired and celebrated, considered as a whole, display uncommon aptitude for dramatic animation and insight into the essence of theatrical effect. The history of their theatre has no connection with that of the Italians and French ; for it developed itselfwholly from the fulness of its own strength without any foreign influence : the attempts to bring it back to an imitation of the ancients, or even of the French, have either been attended with no success, or not been made till a late period in the decay of the drama. A Drama In Sunshine; A Novel $19.99 Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free.Excerpt from book:Section 3CHAPTER II. ILLUMINATION. j]RS. FISH lived upon a small estate, known’ as La Huerta, which lay just outside San Lorenzo, within a few yards of the road to Ireland. The house, an textit{adobe, was encompassed by a small rose-garden, and a large vineyard, where the Rev. Abner had laboured not in vain for ten years. Within and without, the house bore the brand of honourable poverty. The primary colours of roof, walls, and shutters had long ago resolved themselves into neutral tints; the carpets, curtains, and books were mellowed by time and much use; but a glow still lingered upon the face of the ancient Spanish house, like the soft, almost girlish, flush upon the cheeks of its mistress; and intelligent strangers looked at this humble home with more than passing interest, impressed by its reposeful charm and the fragrance of the roses. An textit{emparado, or arbour, led from the front door to the road, twelve feet wide, and as many yards long; and here, beneath the shade of wistaria, clematis, and jasmine, might be found during the greater portionof the year the widow and her friends, sewing, gossiping, and scheming solemnly for the advancement and welfare of the Church. The vineyard, leased on shares to an industrious Portuguese, produced annually some thirty to forty tons of Mission grapes. From these was expressed a rough but sound wine, with immense body and peculiar flavour, but well suited to the palates and purses of those who bought it. The vineyard, a few dozen fruit trees, and as many prolific hens, furnished the widow and her daughter Dauiaris with an income sufficient to maintain themselves and one serving-woman. Damaris, it is true, played the church organ, a wretched instrument, in consideration of a tiny salary, and she gave music lessons, at fifty cents a lesson, to a select circle … |

A Feminist Perspective on Renaissance Drama $42.95 We know that women made up a significant part of Renaissance theater audiences but how might they have read the plays presented there? This book uses the writings of sixteenth and seventeenth century women to construct a feminist perspective on drama by Shakespeare, Marlowe, Jonson, Middleton, Ford, and their contemporaries. Chapters are arranged thematically on key issues or genres. Women’s religious compositions open up readings of plays like Doctor Faustus and Measure for Measure as interrogations of conventional beliefs which underpinned relations between men and women. Chapter 2 considers drama from across the period, including The Spanish Tragedy, The Revenger’s Tragedy and The Maid’s Tragedy, to show how revenge tragedy taps into deep fears and desires about women’s agency and maternal power. Comedy, the female romantic quest, and the city as a site of female pleasure, are examined in diverse texts such as All’s Well That Ends Well, The Duchess of Malfi, The Roaring Girl and Epicoene. Chapter 4 focuses on the household space as a specifically female form of imprisonment, analyzing Romeo and Juliet, Arden of Faversham, The Tragedy of Mariam and The Changeling and other domestic tragedies in the light of Renaissance women’s experiences. The final chapter discusses queenship, subjects and women’s interventions into masculine history. |

A Gringo’s Guide To Online Hispanic Marketing $16.72 A Gringo’s Guide to Online Hispanic Marketing is the first book of its kind and is a “must read” for anybody that wants to learn how to do business online the right way and also capitalize on one of the most rapidly growing population groups in America that also spans the world. The Hispanic market represents a buying power of over 1 Trillion dollars in America alone and is over 12% of the American population or about 54 Million and growing at 50% per year. In this book you not only learn all of the necessary components to build or grow an online business presence, you also learn how to do it in a new, growing, and unsaturated market with real opportunity – even during a recession. This market includes those of Spanish or Hispanic origin and they are referred to as Generation Equis. It is a group very similar to that represented by the term Generation X (born between 1960 and 1980) – with a different twist. Generation Equis refers to those of Spanish or Hispanic origin born after 1960. Because of their common Spanish language background, the X is replaced with Equis, which is the Spanish pronunciation of the letter X. After reading this book you will fully understand the opportunity. This is an all in one guide on how to sell and market online and to Generation Equis – the right way – leaving your competition in the dust. Topics covered with an emphasis on targeting Generation Equis include: • Creating the ultimate Spanish or Generation Equis Friendly website. • Website analytics to monitor and achieve your online success. • Optimizing your website to achieve #1 search engine placement. • Online email and newsletter messaging strategies. • Internet marketing techniques that work. • Social networking opportunities. Don’t miss your chance to capitalize on this rapidly growing market opportunity. Will you & your business be prepared or left behind? |

A Handbook Of German Literature $19.99 Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free. This is an OCR edition with typos.Excerpt from book:CHAPTER III. “erste Blutezeit” (continued). The Epics Of The Court, Or “hopisches Epos.” We have seen how the sagas of the Volkerwanderung formed the groundwork of the Volksepos. For the poetry of the Court foreign material was utilized—those cycles of legends which form a lesser or greater part of nearly all the literatures of Europe. A brief enumeration of the subjects will lead most easily to the consideration of the poets. 1. The British or Arthurian Legend ; heroes, King Arthur and his knights. 2. The Spanish Legend of the Quest of the Holy Grail. 3. The Classical Legends of the Trojan War, and the deeds of Alexander the Great. 4. French legendary treatment of the history of Charlemagne. Unlike the poets of the Volksepos, nameless and hidden from posterity, the poets of the Hofisches Epos are known to us by name as well as by their works. The most important are the four following: Heinrich von Veldeke, a native of Mastricht, who may have been at Court when, in 1184, the Kaiser Friedrich Barbarossa knighted his two eldest sons, and celebrated the event by the most magnificent festivities. The patronage of poets and poetry was now general among the nobles, and in many of the courts of German princes. Hermann,Landgrave of Thuringia especially, a little later, made himself famous in this respect. Veldeke enjoyed his full share of fame. The work which first made him celebrated among his contemporaries was / his translation of the ” .jjjneid,” in which he drew not from Virgil himself, but from a French translator, Benoit de Saint-More, in whose ” Roman d’Enas” the spirit of antiquity had been replaced by the romance of the Middle Ages. Hartmann von Aue, a Suabian who took part in the Crusades of 1189 and 1197. In addition to his lyrical ” Biichlein,… |

A History Of The French War $19.99 Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free.Excerpt from book:Section 3/ The death of Frontenac interrupted the quarrel. That able and intrepid officer had exercised a powerful influence on the fortunes of the French in America. Much less pure and disinterested than Champlain, exacting and quarrelsome, he continually exasperated his associates in times of peace ; but when danger threatened the colony, they instinctively felt that in his leadership was almost certain victory. He died in November, 1698, at the age of seventy-eight. He was succeeded by Callieres, upon whom devolved the settlement of the dispute about the Iro- quois, who declined to allow the English to negotiate for them, asserting their independence of both the foreign powers. After many councils, and many wampum belts, and much eloquence, the exchange was effected ; but the question of the sovereignty of the west, and even of New York, still remained undecided. In the following year, 1700, the French in Acadia lost their efficient leader Villebon. CHAPTER VIII. Queen Anne’s War. The Spanish Succession—The Pretender—Attacks on Wells, Saco, Casco, Deerfield, and Lancaster—Church in Acadia—Destruction of English Towns in Newfoundland—Sieges of Port Royal—At- tack on Haverhill—Final Capture of Port Royal by the English— Insurrection of the Acadians—Attempted Conquest of Canada by Admiral Walker—Attack of the Foxes on Detroit—Treaty of Utrecht—Louisbourg—Father Rasles—Expeditions of Harmon, Westbrooke, Winslow, and Lovewell—Indian Treaty—Forts atNiagara, Oswego, and Crown Point. BUT a few years of peace succeeded the treaty of Ryswick. First came the contest in Europe over the Spanish succession—that is, the succession to the Spanish crown, which was bestowed upon one of the Bourbons, the reigning family of France. This |
